Country of the Week

World Country discussions

Alright, so, here will be the place to discuss a randomly selected (or possibly chosen) country for a week, and then talk about specific aspects of the countries each week.
Every Thursday, I will name the country of the week, along with announcing each the topic/aspect for us to discuss. You can comment, share, discuss anything on the topic for that day on that country, though please just make sure you stick to the country of the week.

When picking countries, I will either be generating a random country from or generator or will be taking your suggestions form this anonymous if you would like me to.

Weekly countries:

Week 1: The Bahamas
Week 2: Israel
Week 3: Canada
Week 4: Ireland
Week 5: Nigeria
Week 6: Australia
Week 7: France
Week 8: Thailand
Week 9: Egypt
Week 10: Mexico
Week 11: Samoa
Week 12: Brazil

Have fun discussing, @Discussions people,
Caliope (wink)

The Bahamas

Officially the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, is a country within the Lucayan Archipelago in the West Indies. The archipelagic state consists of fewer than 700 islands, cays, and islets in the Atlantic Ocean, and is located north of Cuba and Hispaniola Island (Haitii and the Dominican Republic), northwest of the Turks and Caicos Islands, southeast of the US, and east of the Florida Keys. The capital is Nassau on the island of New Providence. The Royal Bahamas Defence Force describes The Bahamas’ territory as encompassing 470,000 km2(180,000 sq mi) of ocean space.

Today’s topic on The Bahamas is…

Have you ever been to The Bahamas and can you share any pictures or stories from your trip? If you havent been, do you want to and why/why not?

No, I agree. It’s a little difficult given the current crisis in the world. HAHA

Me too. I love to go to that area of the world.

For a second there I thought this said ‘country of the weak” :joy:

I’ve never been, or am really wanting to go but it sounds like a nice place.

BAHAHAHAHA! Now that would be a bit mean.

Yeah, it does. It sounds like the perfect place for a beach holiday. (wink)

I haven’t been there but it does sound like a cool place because it’s sunny there… :desert_island:

Never been to the Bahamas before. Haven’t really had the initiative to go there either. It’s very pretty place to look at in pictures. I’m not a beach person so I wouldn’t enjoy the beach side parts there. I know there are more places and tourist sites to see other than the beach but I’m not someone who travels out of country a lot.

Are you more of a summer holiday than a winter holiday person?

Yeah, neither have I and it’s not very high on my travel list. That is a fair point, perhaps that should be day two’s discussion then…

The Bahamas

Attractions

The Bahamas has more than just a beach, well, not really… Being so many islands, it’s understand why it’s just mainly the beach. Though there is some stuff to do aside from sitting on the beach. Such as…

  • The Nassau Straw Market, a traditional open-air market selling handwoven straw crafts, Bahamian souvenirs & tourist trinkets.
  • Fort Fincastle, it was built to provide protection to Nassau. The fort was built in 1793 by Lord Dunmore to protect Nassau from pirates.
  • Ardastra Gardens, Zoo and Conservation Centre. It opened in 1937 though the work of the Jamaican horticulturist, Hedley Vivian Edwards. From the Latin Ardua astrum, Ardastra means “Striving for the stars”.
  • Aquaventure. Popular, 141-acre aquatic center featuring high-speed waterslides, a lazy river & swimming pools.
  • Dean’s Blue Hole, is the world’s second deepest, after the Dragon Hole in the South China Sea, with a depth of 202 metres.

So today I ask you…

Do any of these interest you or are there any others youd like to add?

It would be a fun place to go I bet. I’ve only been out of country once in the last decade.

All of these places seem interesting! :joy:

Yeah, agreed. Pirate history is always interesting to me. The idea that pirates must have been such a big problem at the time since they were made up of only islands, just really interests me to know more about their history. Just what they went through and the defences they had in place, especially for the time.

Oooh… when you put it like that, it sounds way more awesome and interesting.

So sitting on the beach is your dream holiday, eh? Very nice. You’d have loved my holiday in the South of France last year. Ha.

Yeah, I’m sure. … oooh, where did you go? Maybe you could suggest it in the form in the first post.

HAHA! I totally agree. I really do actually want to go to the Bahamas after doing the research for the post.

Yeah, I love this type of history. This is why I loved to read (and still do read) the Horrible History books.
