Personally I wouldn’t unless he/she is abusive, mistreats me and I know he/she will try to do me harm if I break up with the,

I agree I wouldn’t except if it is for my own safety.
It is in my eyes an form of respect to the other person.

I would do it in person wherever possible (examples where it wouldn’t would include covid lockdowns, the other being a dangerous person or some other extenuating circumstance.)

It’s uncomfy, but shows respect for the other person
